DEFICIT Follows Momentum On Their New Single “DICE” (Track Analysis)
With yet another single under their belt, Australian metalcore outfit DEFICIT continues to solidify their intense blend of prog-metalcore and hardcore to craft an aggressive and relentless track.
“DICE” opens with a technical riff that utilizes the contrast between the low tuning and higher pitched notes in conjunction with pummeling drums and a hooky, screamed chorus section. This catchy intro carries into the rest of the track, filling each moment of space with a memorable riff, gritty bassline or groove that keeps the listening experience engaging and fresh.
With a variety of harmonies scattered throughout the guitar work, there is a sense of brutal beauty in the midst of the track, providing an almost “sing-along” melody. In the same vein, the chorus has a melodically driven vocal phrase that provides an epic, soaring vocal performance.
However, this sense of catchy melody soon decays into a wall of heaviness as the tempo shifts and the riffs become dirtier. As the drummer hits the ride cymbal, the whole tone of the track shifts into an intense breakdown that carries the song out. No longer focused on the melody, DEFICIT ends the track with a moment of brutality that leaves a lasting impact on the listener.
