ALBUM: Basement-‘Promise Everything’
It’s been four whole years since Basements last album Colourmeinkindness was released. After a hiatus in 2013 and a three song EP in 2014, Basement is back at it with Promise Everything. Greatly reminiscent of their last EP Further Sky, Promise Everything is equal parts catchy choruses and aggressive melodies. Even with a four year gap in between albums, Basement hasn’t lost their touch. In comparison to their prior work, Promise everything showcases Basements softer side. Vocalist Andrew Fisher has come a long way vocally, his range reaching highs it never has before. Promise Everything is exactly what fans have been waiting for, and more.
When Basement announced their hiatus in 2013, it was a complete shock. Their album Colourmeinkindness was an absolute masterpiece, and it seemed like the band could go nowhere but up. After a year of silence they teased fans with the EP Further Sky, which at first threw fans off balance. Basement had transitioned from grungy and aggressive to melodic and melancholy. Looking back Further Sky was the perfect transition between albums, a bridge between the old and new giving fans a taste of what the band now has to offer.
Basement could’ve taken the same route other bands in their genre have, by shifting gears into making music with a shoegaze influence, but Basement has never been a band to go with the flow. Promise Everything sounds like a hit record straight out of the 90’s. Songs like Aquasun and For You The Moon showcase the growth of Fishers vocals, and give the album a nostalgic, moody vibe. Basement has made strides with this album, every song a puzzle piece that comes together and completes Promise Everything perfectly.
Even with all this change, fans shouldn’t be wary of Promise Everything, Basements old grungy aggressive feel is still evident within this album, and it is just toned down greatly. Lyrically, this is the strongest work Basement has ever produced, Promise Everything is filled to the brim with catchy songs that will hook fans on the first listen. Promise Everything is potentially some of the strongest work Basement has ever released, and the wait was well worth it. Promise Everything can be currently streamed on Pandora, and will be fully released January 29th.
