Pop-rock powerhouses RIVALS tease their forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Sad Looks Pretty On Me’ with the release of their latest single, “Strawberries”.
The juxtaposition of a weighty topic and a lighthearted, upbeat sound is the band’s testament to finding happiness through healing. With the power of a contagious chorus, “Strawberries” demonstrates further range within RIVALS’ sound to bring an ambient and saccharine feel-good track.
“Strawberries” tackles overcoming the draining, codependent rollercoaster of addiction, a topic closely personal to frontwoman Kalie Wolfe, who steps into an extension of herself unique to the song with vulnerability and poise. The music video candidly depicts the same character conveyed through Wolfe‘s lyricism.
“Micket wrote [‘Strawberries’] to a Latin-styled beat which gave it this extremely uplifting feeling while also still feeling like RIVALS. In the studio it was a very different vibe for us, we all sat around just so confused about how amazing the song was sounding even though it was so different than our normal style, but we just rolled with it and we’re so glad we did. To our favorite lyric in that song ‘Happy is temporary but I can’t look back,’ keep moving forward and don’t look back!”
— Kalie Wolfe (vocalist)
‘Sad Looks Pretty On Me’ is slated to release on March 19 on Smartpunk Records.
