While some anthemically inspire optimism, metalcore pioneers Architects are encouraging collective reflection from a hopeless and bleak headspace with their latest release “Black Lungs”, the second single off their forthcoming album ‘For Those That Wish To Exist’.
Giving a nod to the planet’s rampant climate crisis, “Black Lungs” questions humankind’s reckless and destructive nature from a place of self-accountability, rather than one of blame or complacency. Architects‘ message couldn’t be more clear: the physical world around us is dying, and we’re destined to suffer if we refuse to look at ourselves and change.
Throughout scenes of the band’s performance, the music video depicts falling ash that could be easily mistaken for snow if it weren’t for the song’s forthright lyrics, along with two ghostly figures radiating white light and a first-person point of view running through a forest. The visual juxtaposition is post-apocalyptic and almost feels out of touch with reality– like everyone is running from something that could never happen– but at the same time, is conveyed in a way that feels very real.
Sonically softer and playing off the same energy as the band’s former single “Animals”, “Black Lungs” may take a few replays to truly resonate with some, but nonetheless carries Architects‘ trademark aggression with a powerful message that remains undiminished.
