Texas-based alt-metal outfit Doubting Thieves have released their new single, “Dark Clouds“, featuring Michael Barr of Volumes, alongside an official lyric video for the track.

Industrial synths and electronic beats set the tone of the song immediately, building into massive djenty guitars and unique time-signatures with impressive clean vocals. The aggression grows with each second through the track’s runtime, with an brutal guest vocal performance from Volumes vocalist Michael Barr at the track’s climax and chorus lyrics shining a spotlight on mental health, passionately singing “All of these dark clouds surrounding me/feels like it’s bringing me down to my knees/and all of this anxiety/and now it’s painstaking”.

Vocalist and lyricist Dylan Buck shared the meaning behind the song,

“When I write a song it tends to reflect what I’m going through currently in my life. It’s no surprise that a lot of us struggle with mental illness such as depression and anxiety. Everyone has their ups and their downs. This song in particular was written on one of my down days. The lyrics speak about not being able to shake the sunken feeling within yourself. Everywhere you go, it follows like a rain cloud looming overhead. It’s clouding all of your sunshine. I’ve said this previously to a few friends. It’s like I can go to sleep content and happy, but I’ll wake up the next morning feeling like the world is out to get me. It’s not an everyday thing, but on those days all I can really do is tag along for the ride and hope the next day brings back the sunlight.”

Mateo Ottie I make loud guitar noises and have unpopular opinions. If it’s underground alternative or progressive metal, I probably like it.
