Motionless In White Show Off New Side Of Them In ‘Decades’

0

The Scranton-based metalcore legends in Motionless in White have returned with their latest record, with ‘Decades’. This marks their first release since their last album from 2022, ‘Scoring the End of the World’. This record shows them once again playing to their strengths and what they’re best at, but also experimenting more than they have in prior albums.

The record plays to the hits and what they’ve always been great at with its singles in “Afraid of the Dark”, “Playing God”, and “R.I.P.”. It makes sense why they picked these as the three singles, since they feel like songs they excel at and what the fans have come to expect. Great breakdowns, catchy hooks, and honest lyrics. Even other tracks like “Fight Like Hell” or “log_in//crash out” are songs that feel reminiscent of a band like Bring Me the Horizon, but they make it their own still. But the latter half of this record shows them experimenting more with electronic music and even incorporating it in their breakdowns. Tracks like “All That I’ve Ever Known”, “Blood Rave”, and “Count Back from Zero” all feel experimental in that regard and that they wanna see how it plays with the fans. I think it’s a solid experimentation, as they’ve always incorporated synth into their music and this is no exception.

Drummer Vinny Mauro absolutely kills it on this record, not even a question. He shines on tracks like “Afraid of the Dark” and the title track, as the production really elevates how crisp his drums sound here. He’s been a great addition to this band for the past decade plus that he’s been slaying it with them. Vocalist Chris Motionless is probably one of the most iconic in the scene, and his vocals on here are a testament to why. He feels like such an ideal frontman for this genre, jumping between metalcore and hard rock…and even electronic at times. He shows off his range and his abilities in tracks like “Blood Rave” and “R.I.P.” with just how good he is at this shit. I’m not the biggest fan of them ending the album on a cover in “Sunglasses at Night”, but they picked a good one to cover and make it their own since it feels with the vibes of this record with how electronic and synth heavy it is. I also wanna give a shoutout to both Skylar Grey and Corey Taylor‘s features on this record. Their features do such a great job at elevating both tracks on opposite sides of this band, and adding such an extra flavor to already great songs that feel like instant classics.

All in all, I still think ‘Decades’ is a solid entry in Motionless in White’s discography as a whole. They really show that they’re still willing to experiment and reinvent themselves so many albums in, and I definitely applaud them for that. I feel new and old fans will have something for each of them on this record, and I’m curious to see how they take the new side of this band.
