With a sudden change of plans effecting their established summer touring schedule, Sacramento’s Swancore superstars Dance Gavin Dance quickly acted by booking a 21-date “intimate tour” across the US. Dubbed the “An Evening With Friends” Tour and also featuring Royal Coda and Body Thief, the tour began on July 26th at the legendary Whiskey A Go-Go in West Hollywood and concluded on August 24th at The Fillmore in San Francisco — selling out every single night of the tour.
With guitarist/vocalist Andrew Wells taking over singing duties for this tour, DGD enlisted the help of Veil Of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo and Royal Coda/Eidola’s Sergio Medina. The latter of which returning for a second time as their fill-in bassist following the tragic passing of DGD bassist Tim Feerick earlier this year.
As a long-time Dance Gavin Dance fan, it was a pleasure to hear every single era of the band represented within the 15-song set list; even right down to the stage production. The stage was filled with scrims featuring the album covers from their extensive 10 album career. Starting out with perhaps the band’s biggest throwback “And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman”, the band took the stage. The band also highlighted their recently released album ‘Jackpot Juicer’ with performances of singles “Synergy” and “Pop Off!” Halfway through the set, Royal Coda frontman/former DGD vocalist Kurt Travis joined the band on stage for performances of “Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Most” and “Carl Barker”. Perhaps my favorite Andrew Wells renditions of the night were his performances of “Blue Dream” and “We Own The Night” as Wells particularly shined here. Following a brief exit from the stage after their performance of “Evaporate”, the band returned one last time, along with Kurt Travis, for an encore performance of “Rock Solid” — ending the night.
